Former Teacher Guilty?

Alright, it’s time for me to do what I do best. Be controversial and brutally honest. I have to talk about this teacher “luring” the student on Facebook. I use the term loosely in regards to him, but I will admit some luring had been done, but they charged the wrong person.

It has been claimed and somewhat foolishly decided that said Mr. Smith lured this 16 year old girl on Facebook. So let’s look at the fact. The Herald states:

“The student visited Smith at the junior high shortly after that to get him to autograph a copy of a book he had written. During that visit, the girl "poured out her life’s troubles and sought some sort of solace from her former teacher because she was depressed and upset. At the conclusion of that meeting, he gave her a hug, which she says felt weird”.

It felt weird? She pours her heart out to a former teacher about her life, looks for help from a FORMER teacher, and the hug felt “Weird”? If you have that kind of connection, that you go to a former teacher, not your current one, why would a hug feel weird? How was it weird? Did her arm get in the way, and she got a cramp? Did he get a boner in his slacks? What was weird? Is weird the best descriptive word a 16yr old can come up with? She doesn’t seem very articulate. Maybe, and more accurately, she is not very creative. Maybe she didn’t get the “solace” she was looking for and decided to teach him a lesson. It’s not like it would be the first case where a student was in love with, and rejected by a teacher. Let’s look at some other facts.

“About a month later, the girl "took it upon herself to engage him in further online conversation to see if she could get some evidence against him, believing that there was something wrong with this chap and his character.”

Ok, so the girl that could only come up with “weird” is going to launch her own investigation? Did she happen to read a copy of Nancy Drew and think she was a detective? Why didn’t she report this “weird hug” before? She claims it made her sick to her stomach to engage in the conversation, yet she continued relentlessly to ask him if he thought she was attractive, and carried on with him for two weeks.  He initially insisted that it was inappropriate, but she pressed on. Being a teacher I’m sure he understands the sometimes fragile personal image issues of teens girls, and eventually said yes to ensure her potentially fragile ego was not shattered. Admittedly this doesn’t seem as likely, but it is still possible.

She continued to ask him baited questions, and when asked which body part he liked best, he said her bum. Her bum? If this guy was really hot for this girl, would he say bum? Sounds like more of her imaginative creativity at work. They continued on with the texts and facebooking for weeks……..WEEKS. If it took her weeks to get this guy to say he wanted to do her, do you think he really did? And once again, saying so is not a crime based on the subject matter of the conversation SHE initiated under the possible guise if "investigation".

And why is this considered Luring? The age of consent for ANY Sexual activity is 14 in Nova Scotia. The Criminal Code of Canada defines consent as a voluntary agreement between two people to engage in a specific sexual activity at a specific time. Consent that is obtained through pressure, fear, force or threats of force (either to yourself or to someone else), is not voluntary consent.

By this definition, the communication they had was not illegal. She initiated a sexual conversation of her own free will, and after some extended pressure, he capitulated.

His only error here is lack of judgment, or if he was truly enamored with her, having not a shred of common sense. She tricked him, and he fell for it. The crime was not luring, it was letting his penis run his brain.

But I offer this…… Why wasn’t the girl charged? She is certainly not free from guilt, and there is also sufficient cause and potential motive for her to have created all of this, or to at least create reasonable doubt. Was there any inquiry in how she conducted her “investigation”?

I’m sorry, but to me she looks like a jilted teenager and not a victim.

And that as usual, is my Two cents.

Just a thought, I'm willing to bet you wouldn't have the same opinion if Adora was that 16 yr old girl... Something to ponder :)

In fact I would. I am a big supporter in that you must face the outcome of decisions you make. This girl obviously did this on purpose. Adora is being raised to understand that decisions can have consequences, and she will be taught to understand that vindictiveness is wrong.

Also , why is that the always the answer. I may feel differently if it was her, it wouldn't mean I wouldn't think she was wrong or it was her fault. I am objective. Especially with my kids.
